Ring, the Amazon-owned home security system, is under new scrutiny after firing employees for improperly accessing Ring users’ video data.
This news highlights a risk that exists across many tech companies: employees may abuse the access they are given, as it is a part of their jobs to look at customer data. In Ring’s case it’s a sensitive matter, as the customers had located the cameras inside their homes. Even though these employees were authorized to view video data, they viewed more than they needed to in order to do their jobs.
“We are aware of incidents discussed below where employees violated our policies,” states the letter from Ring, dated January 6. “Over the last four years, Ring has received four complaints or inquiries regarding a team member’s access to Ring video data,” it continues.
Ring said it is reducing the number of employees who have access to videos to just three people, and that it is changing the default setting on all of its new cameras to reinforce security.
But even though Ring is doing all it takes to protect its customers’ privacy, can we truly trust surveillance cameras again?
