There must be several ways to get them right, but I\u2019ll describe the method we successfully used at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.exoplatform.com\/?utm_source=BlogEn&amp;utm_medium=Blog&amp;utm_campaign=Content&amp;utm_content=link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eXo<\/a>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-602daf0 myheader1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"602daf0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\r\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">1- Bottom-up survey\n<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c2ae7b1 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"c2ae7b1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\r\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-02957ae elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"02957ae\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>First, I think it\u2019s important to involve your people via some kind of survey. Leave the questions open rather than providing multiple-choice answers. Data from the latter is easier to collect and to analyse but it\u2019s more of a vote than a survey. Chances are some values are actually already there, deeply embedded into your company core, without you even realising it.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bc082a1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bc082a1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>When we did the survey at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.exoplatform.com\/?utm_source=BlogEn&amp;utm_medium=Blog&amp;utm_campaign=Content&amp;utm_content=link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eXo<\/a>, we were surprised at how many people mentioned \u2018family\u2019 and \u2018helping each other\u2019 in connection with the\u00a0<strong>company values<\/strong>. It turned out that that was a value already practised by most people in their teams, without any official request or encouragement.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-529e807 myheader1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"529e807\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\r\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">2- Top-down management team interviews\n\n<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2502794 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"2502794\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\r\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-274e94a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"274e94a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Interviewing the\u00a0<strong>management team<\/strong>\u00a0is another key step. Here the goal is to do some wishful thinking: what kind of company would we want to build? What do we want to stand for? It\u2019s more a question of what the values should be rather than of what they already are. Although most managers naturally promote values that are important to them within their teams.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3e1b850 myheader1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3e1b850\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\r\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">3- Shortlist\n\n\n<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d4b4c69 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"d4b4c69\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\r\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b5d023d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b5d023d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>After the initial information gathering from the teams and managers, you need to treat the data and come up with a shortened list of values.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cdf58e0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cdf58e0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>If your company has been in place for a while, some common values will probably be apparent once you analyse the data. It\u2019s indeed highly unlikely that a company would operate smoothly with 100 very different values across the board.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-84275b9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"84275b9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>If your company is new, you don\u2019t have 1000 people to survey. You can just invent what you want to stand for and then spread it.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-184e984 myheader1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"184e984\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\r\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">4- Reality check\n\n<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-42f313b elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"42f313b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\r\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-efeb194 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"efeb194\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Once you have your shortlist, you should do a reality check of each item. Is this something that your company practises or is this something that exists only in theory?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c7adef5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c7adef5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The goal of this exercise is to identify which are your core values, already embedded into your company\u2019s activity and behaviour, and which are the values that you want\/need to seed. While you might want to keep some of the latter, you can\u2019t rely only on \u2018new\u2019 values.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7b8a1d2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7b8a1d2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It\u2019s of course possible to steer your company in a new direction. For instance, in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.exoplatform.com\/?utm_source=BlogEn&amp;utm_medium=Blog&amp;utm_campaign=Content&amp;utm_content=link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eXo<\/a>, we chose to become customer-centric. We declared this to be our value and then we spent and are still spending a lot of energy to introduce this into our DNA.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e3b8229 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e3b8229\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>But you can\u2019t do that with a list of five new values. So you need to keep values that are already in your DNA on your shortlist.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8997a1b myheader1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8997a1b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\r\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">5- Express\n<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b8faf6f elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"b8faf6f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\r\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9064d41 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9064d41\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Finally, your list will be shortened to a maximum of five values. The number five is completely arbitrary \u2013 it can be three or seven or one. But it needs to be short and easy to remember. So the final step is to express your values in a clear and easy-to-remember way.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-22ea91f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"22ea91f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Maybe some values are subsets of a larger concept. Maybe some values can be expressed differently, through shorter and more impactful words. Maybe your values form a poem or a slogan. Whatever works for you.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4b88c34 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4b88c34\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>I hope the above was useful.
